How to Beat the Applicant-Tracking System

Updated: Oct 26, 2018

Applicant-Tracking Systems (ATS) are taking over the world… but there’s something you can do!

With ATS usage on the rise across all sectors and industries, it won’t be long before the fantasy of having a robot interact with you becomes reality. Good news is that this software is not advanced enough to control the nuclear missile facilities across the globe, so there’s no need to worry about Skynet taking over and killing all of humanity anytime soon. But get worried about not finding a job. Get worried about being rejected. Get worried about the fact that no matter how good and emotional your cover letter or CV is, nobody will care.

Because nobody will see it.

Your CV will only be seen by a cold, emotionless machine, and it is that machine that will decide whether you, as a human being, are worthy of consideration. So, let me help you beat the machine with some FREE advice. Here are 3 THINGS YOU MUST DO to land the job of your dreams:

1) USE THEIR KEYWORDS.

Keywords are your best friend. Pick the most relevant ones that recur in the job/ company description and use them! This will show the ATS that you are a good match for the company and that you are therefore suited to move onto the interview stage.

2) CONSISTENCY.

Bad news is that the robot can track you across multiple platforms. It will look at all your social media profiles and anywhere else you have an online presence.

Good news is you control what is online.

Create consistency between your online persona and the version of yourself that you are advertising on your CV.

3) BE SPECIFIC. BE CONCRETE.

This is no place for b******t. Get your head around the fact that you won’t get anywhere if what you’ve done is not measurable. People look for results, not for shiny titles and motivational quotes or generic abilities. Nobody is going to be interested in how “teamwork oriented” or “inspired” you are, unless you give them tangible, real and measurable proof of that. For example, rather than saying you have “excellent IT skills, include all the software you are proficient in, all your certifications and the courses you’ve taken on the matter.

Implementing these 3 pieces of advice will help you improve your life as a job seeker, whether that involves landing your first job or helping you transition to the job of your dreams.
